We have come so far To see that you have touched our lives And we tried so hard for so many years To finally reach this understanding And only now to be taken from The place we staked our lives upon So let's take the time and make the best of What we have now left of us Don't you want to sit up next to me? Pass the time so fine and free

30 years since this story found it's way back to my tongue I never told no one A young man searched this world over far and wide Looking for his bride A cold wind caught him by surprise as he passed the sign In this town of mine He sees his life as a gift to us all Just waiting for the summer train to come and take him home He sees his life, he sees it all Just waiting for the summer train to come and take him home Bought a ticket, stepped down from the lift watching the oncoming train Standing in the rain Hand to hat, he watched his box roll down the tracks Never looking back Switchman gasps at the sudden blast of smoke and soot A slip of the foot He sees his life as a gift to us all Just waiting for the summer train to come and take him home He sees his life, he sees its all Just waiting for the summer train to come and take him home

As my eyes slowly opened that day A slight smile crept on to my dead face The bright vile sun took its normal place And the sky was filled with no grey, no grey The dream of the previous night It would rebound I walked into the dim light room And sat right down Through my ears pounded the heavy sound That filled my soul and covered me all around, all around Many times have I looked but never found What you are to all as you wore that crown Your words spoken without a frown And here are mine to you as I drown, I drown No grey, No grey, No grey, No grey

Gonna set my feet to dancing all night Gonna close my eyes, make everything alright Gonna walk the street, walk it up and down 'Till you appeal to me It's infinite by me Gonna set my feet to dancing all night Gonna close my eyes, make everything alright Gonna close my eyes and I will see You spoke to me It's infinite by me

Broken, lonely, torn apart Oh, the conditions of my heart Lights down, locked up inside this room 3 melancholy days something better happen soon I cried for freedom, I cried for hope All hope was gone until you spoke My anger raged inside of me You took it away Lord and see me free The phone then rang and it dawned on me Patz gave me a call, set me free Take me from the waters so deep The oceans of fears that won't allow me to sleep

Have no anxiety at all But in everything give thanks By prayer and petition And the peace of God That surpasses all Will guard and mind And it's free In Christ Jesus

I guess that this is the end I might never see your face again At least for a while, my friend Until we meet again, I don't know when Times like these you'll (I'll) never erase Final thoughts, the expressions on a (your) face Unsure of what to say, an awkward silence remains And as you fade away, alright then lates Get on a spaceship, man Travel far away To see what I have done Each and every day I'm sure (thought) that they could not see Now they have a way I think that for now I'll just stay

about

Founded in the Spring of 1997 by teenagers Barrett Black and Daniel Patz, The Pawn Shoppe was an acoustic guitar duo based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Active for a 16-month period through the summer of 1998, the band played 15 public performances—including the Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, and Tennessee Mountain in New York City. The Pawn Shoppe also wrote more than a dozen original compositions, 10 of which are preserved here in various forms.

The title of this collection comes from Barrett’s reaction to hearing this long-lost tape for the first time in forever: “It sounds like a rumbly, jangly river.” And so here it is: A Rumble, A Jangle, A River, The Pawn Shoppe’s first official release…25 years in the making.

DISCLAIMER: These are amateur recordings made by 17-year-olds with cassettes. Please do not expect professional-quality audio. Just sit back and enjoy a time warp to the late ‘90s!

Tracks 12-16 are taken from a live jam among friends captured directly to a consumer-grade TDK cassette tape at the Myers family home on December 13, 1997. Track 17 is a home demo recording by Daniel Patz in the Spring of 1998.

All songs written and performed by Barrett Black and Daniel Patz. Except “Clive Clevus” lyrics by Daniel Patz and Jeff Roedel, and music by Barrett Black and Daniel Patz. “WWOZ” and “Devil Girl” written by Kevin Griffin. Track 12, an early version of “Mr. Fuzz Man,” features an additional section that includes inspiration and elements of the song “For The One,” originally written and performed by Meantree. Later versions of “Mr. Fuzz Man” removed this section, as heard on track 5. “Morning Star” demo written and performed by Daniel Patz. Tracks 12-16 feature percussion by Brandon Powell. Original recordings and 2023 post-production Jeff Roedel.

For her continual support, sincere gratitude goes to band archivist Ashley Gavin Johnson, without whom the safekeeping and digital transfer of this rediscovered cassette tape would not have occurred.

And to family, friends, and Shoppe Heads everywhere: “Thank you very, very much!”
